How to Measure for a Leotard
Measure over underwear or close-fitting clothing using a flexible tape measure. Stand naturally and keep the tape comfortably against the body without pulling it tight.

Girth
Key MeasurementUsing a flexible tape measure, start at the centre of one shoulder. Bring the tape down the front of the torso, through the crotch and back up the body to the same shoulder, creating one complete loop.
Keep the tape close to the body without pulling it tight. The dancer should stand naturally while being measured.
Bust
Measure around the fullest part of the chest, keeping the tape straight and level around the body.
Waist
Measure around the natural waist, usually the narrowest part of the torso. Do not pull the tape too tightly.
Hips
Measure around the fullest part of the hips and seat, keeping the tape level.
Height
Stand straight without shoes and measure from the floor to the top of the head.
For leotards, girth is one of the most important measurements because it reflects the dancer's full torso length. If your measurements fall across different sizes, pay particular attention to girth. Dancers with a longer torso will often be more comfortable in the larger size.

Bring the Texture Back to Your Suede Soles
When your dance shoes start to feel smoother underfoot, a little sole care can make a useful difference. The Diamant HW10910 Dance Shoe Wire Brush with Case is designed to clean and roughen suede leather dance soles, helping restore their texture and grip. With a wooden handle and a protective case for storage, it is a practical part of preparing for ballroom classes, Latin practice and social evenings.
Diamant HW10910 Suede Sole Brush – Design & Everyday Use
The wire bristles work into the surface of the suede to loosen accumulated dirt and help lift flattened fibres. This roughening action refreshes the sole’s nap, the fine, raised texture that contributes to its balance of grip and glide on the dance floor.
A shaped wooden handle gives you space to hold and guide the brush while working across the sole. Use light, controlled strokes to concentrate on areas that have become smooth, allowing the bristles to do the work without digging into the leather.
The included protective case keeps the wire bristles covered between uses. It is a particularly useful detail when the brush shares your dance bag with shoes, tights, clothing or other accessories that could catch on exposed wires.
Why Suede Dance Soles Start to Feel Slippery
Dust, dirt and residue from waxed floors can build up in suede soles, leaving areas looking smooth or shiny. Brushing helps remove this build-up and bring texture back to the surface. The result depends on the condition of the sole and the floor you are dancing on, so check the feel with a few gentle steps after brushing.
How to Use a Dance Shoe Wire Brush
- Start with dry soles. Let damp shoes dry naturally before brushing.
- Hold the shoe securely. Keep your fingers clear of the wire bristles.
- Brush in one direction. Use light, even strokes across the suede surface.
- Check the smoother areas. Give flattened patches beneath the forefoot or suede-covered heel a little extra attention, avoiding heavy scraping.
- Clear away loosened debris. Check the sole’s texture, then return the brush to its case after use.
Suede Sole Care – Your Questions Answered
How often should I brush my suede dance soles?
Diamant recommends roughening suede soles once before or after each dance lesson. Check their condition and use gentle strokes; repeated heavy brushing can unnecessarily wear the material.
Can I use this wire brush on the top of my dance shoes?
The HW10910 is intended for suede soles. Keep it away from shoe uppers, including satin, patent leather and delicate suede. For suitable suede uppers, the Diamant HW10904 suede-cleaning brush offers a separate cleaning option, subject to your shoe’s care guidance.
Product Highlight

Dance World Tip: Brush over a bin or another suitable area away from the dance floor, so loosened debris does not end up underfoot.
